Example of Activity Analysis


Activity analysis (Chopping up vegetable)

Description – cooking is the process of preparing meal.
Objects used and their properties- Tools Used
1.       Chopping Board
2.       Chopping Knife
3.       Vegetable

Space Demand – physical environment suitable for the cooking activity

1.       Chopping activity suitable to be done in kitchen
2.       The chopping board must be on a table level or suitable height
3.       Activity must be done on a flat and even surface
4.       Surrounding area must be cleared from cutting area
5.       The floor condition also must not be slippery while handling with knife

Social Demand-social or cultural issue that required for this activity

1.       The involvement of group member consisting of 8 to 12 person in a group
2.       The rules when handling sharp object must be explain first to patient.
3.       The group member must interact with each other to determine what type of chopping sizes suitable for the cooking.

Sequence, timing, & pattern 

1.       Steps include:
a.       Selecting the Vegetable
b.      Wash them
c.       Rinse the vegetable
d.      Holding the knife
e.      Grasp the vegetable
f.        Start to chopping the vegetable
g.       Move the chopped vegetable to appropriate plate
  

Required skills (observation Action)

·         The prehension hand skill must be mastered by the patient in order to sustain this chopping activity
·         The handling of the sharp tools must be heavily monitored by the therapist at all time.

Required body structure and function

·         Motor skill
o   Need to stabilize upper body , spine, pelvic and lower body while standing on the floor
o   Slightly flex the shoulder and slightly flex the elbow and slightly pronate and flex wrist and flex the hand and grip the knife in order to chop the vegetable.
o   The proximal stability muscle must be strengthen to chop the vegetable.

·         Body structure
o   The patient must have body posture whether in on standing or sitting in wheelchair
o   Both hand must be coordinated while doing chopping activity

Grading for chopping activity

·         To ensure the patient is capable in doing chopping activity, grading must be done. Type of grading that can be done are :
1.       Knife Handle – The knife handle must be from big to small.
2.       Weight of handle – From light to heavy
3.       Hardiness of the vegetable – from soft vegetable eg; tomatoes to hard vegetable eg; potato
4.       Thickness of the vegetable - from thin vegetable eg; salad to thick vegetable eg; cucumber.

Burden Care Asessements


this is some example assessement for burden care.. 
1)Zarit Burden Interview
Developed by:
Steven H. Zarit (USA)
Objective:
To assess the level of burden experienced by the principal caregivers of older persons with senile dementia and disabled persons.
Year : 1980 / 2001
Also known as Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and Burden Interview (BI).
Translation of ZBI are available in French, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish & Brazilian.
The items(questionnaires):
  1. Generated based  on clinical experience with caregivers of adults with dementia.
  2. Word subjective.
  3. Include aspects of distress, perception of social, physical health, financial, emotional burden and relationship.
  4. Originally a 29-item scale , the 22 item scale is more commonly used.

2) Care- Giving Burden Scale

Develop on 1994 which is domain on social aspects
Description :
-   a 13-item questionnaire
- developed to measure the subjective burden of the caregiver.
-It was originally developed using a sample of informal caregivers of psychogeriatric patients.
-The CBS has two subscales :
- measure Relationship (7 items)
- Personal Consequences (6 items).
-Scoring/Interpretation
 Once the questionnaire is completed, the items are recoded where an original items rated 1 or 2 are given a value of 0 and items originally rated 3,4, or 5 are given a value of 1. 
  No information is available regarding interpretation of the score.
-Time to Administer: Approximately 10-15 minutes


3) Caregiver Strain Index (CSI)
Develop in 1983 by M.Terry Sullivan
 This tools is designed for the person who care for chronically disabled elders.
Used as a screening tools to identify the families who faced with the  strain caregiving experience.
Is a tool that can be used to quickly identify families with potential caregiving concern.
It is a 13-question tool that measure strain related to care provision
Positive responses to 7 or more items on the index indicate a greater level of strain.
       This instrument is used to assess individual of any age who have the responsibility of a caregiver for an older adult.
       There score:   If Yes=1 and No=0
       The instruction given:
“ I am going to read a list of things that other people have found to be difficult. Would you tell me if any of these apply to you? “

WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST ?

Occupational Therapist is one of health care professional career that help people achieve independent in their life. Occupational therapist assist people in developing the current skills or new skills for the job of living required for independent and satisfying of lives. Working with all age’s group of people, helping them to carry out the activities has become a part of the job.

According to American Occupational therapy Association, occupational therapist provides services such as :

 •  Teach strategies to incorporate healthy habits and routines into daily activities for clients of  all ages and abilities

 •  Educate about the importance of relaxation and rest to achieve balance between work and leisure; teach relaxation techniques

 •  Provide skills training in areas such as socialization, care giving, parenting, time management, stress management, etc.
